Wendy Rosen Applauds Supreme Court for Ruling on Affordable Care Act

Today’s Supreme Court ruling on The Affordable Care Act is welcome news for thousands of Eastern Shore citizens who would not otherwise have access to affordable healthcare. It is clear from the ruling of the Court that Tea Party Republicans, who had hoped to overturn the Act on constitutional grounds, have over reached in their pursuit of a right-wing ideology and are out of touch with mainstream America.

Chief Justice Roberts, a George W. Bush appointee, wrote the majority opinion for a decision that upheld the vast majority of the Affordable Care Act including the individual mandate.

Wendy Rosen was informed of the ruling while working with campaign staff had this to say; “while no bill is perfect, this law will accomplish so much good. Insurers can no longer deny coverage for pre-existing conditions, our children can now stay on our health insurance until the age of 26, and most importantly insurers are required to use 85% of premiums to actually provide healthcare. I applaud the Supreme Court for their ruling in this case.”

Wendy Rosen’s opponent in November’s election, Congressman Andy Harris, has been an outspoken opponent of healthcare reform and has promised he would work to repeal the Affordable Care Act. “Andy has always been out of touch with the needs of his constituents,” said Wendy Rosen, “his stance on healthcare, women’s rights, and the Chesapeake Bay has consistently shown that his allegiance is to an extremist and partisan ideology rather than to the needs of the voters. What’s more, this decision shows that his opposition to the ACA on constitutional grounds is completely bogus. This was never about constitutionality for Congressman Harris; it was about political ideology and protecting his friends in the health insurance lobby.”

While the legality of the Affordable Care Act has been decided, it is clear that healthcare reform will be a major issue in this year’s elections. When asked about her stance on comprehensive reform Rosen had this to say “There is a lot of good in the Affordable Care Act and I will work to see that those reforms remain in place. There is still so much work to do though and further legislation is needed to make sure that everyone has access to care.”
